Rejoicing In The Word For Ladies – Generations – Part 2 (July 2025)

“Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” (Psa. 90:1-2)

We consider a generation to be a people of the same period or living at the same time. In a Biblical sense, a generation can be thought of as an age. Therefore, the Bible will refer to the third, the fourth, even the tenth generation! Throughout those ages, God speaks to the generations.

  • The sin of one generation weighs upon the next.

“The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation” Num. 14:18.

This is a heavy lesson. While the Bible teaches individual accountability for sin, there is no avoiding the consequential choices of mothers and fathers in their generations.

  • God provides a way of salvation in each generation. Praise the Lord!

And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever be among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord; as ye do, so he shall do” Num. 15:14.

  • There are generational judgments.

“Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers” Deut. 1:35.

This is not an individual judgment but a general condemnation. There are several examples in the Old Testament showing God’s using a Gentile nation to judge the people of Israel for their rebellion. God may still judge nations, even today.

  • God is faithful to every generation.

“Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations” Deut. 7:9. “Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth” Psa. 119:90.

God has dealt evenly and consistently across the centuries of human history. God has provided a way of salvation by faith in every generation. He has preserved His Word for every generation. He sustains His creation in every generation. None of us are left without a witness.

  • There is value in training the next generation.

“Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee” Deut. 32:7.

God’s plan is for each generation to be taught by previous generations. He expects the younger will learn from the elder. Respect for the wisdom of godly experience is a Biblical principle. (Titus 2:2-8; Isa. 3:5)

May we show forth His praise in this generation! (-V.K.S.)
