Rejoicing In The Word For Ladies – The Written Word (Jan. 2026)
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14a)
The word (from the Greek logos) is referenced throughout the first three Gospels.
“…speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.”
“…He cast out the spirits with His word…”
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
“The sower soweth the word.”
“…ministers of the word…”
“the people pressed upon Him to hear the word of God…”
“Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.”
Then we come to the Gospel of John, and we read of the Word (Logos) made flesh – the living embodiment of all the written words of Scriptures. As we celebrate the human advent of the eternal Word this month, I am thankful for the written record of His life and work that He has preserved for us.
“And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” (Luke 16:31) What value is placed on the written word in this story of the rich man and Lazarus! The testimony of the writings of Moses and the prophets is of more value than a resurrection!
“ For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty….We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:” (2 Pet. 1:16-19) It is written down and secure, and it comes with a heavenly guarantee. (Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away!)
“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Rom. 15:4) When Jesus descended to earth, born as a baby to dwell among men, He accepted the limitations of humanity. He lived in the realm of space and time. By His own choice, He could not be in two places at one time. (His friend, Lazarus, died while waiting for Jesus to arrive.) What a blessing, then, that each of us can hold the written word in our hands, and through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope right there before us, at all times.
Praise the Lord for the living Word and the written word. He is, indeed, a light that shineth in a dark place! (V.K.S.)
